Debunking the Top 3 Myths of Content Marketing:
I’ve had the privilege of speaking to hundreds of CEOs in my career. They range from outstanding to inspiring when it comes to speaking to the virtues of their companies and brands. That’s why I find it ironic when the topic of content marketing comes up, a great many of them have a litany of excuses as to why content marketing can’t work for them. Here are the top three “roadblocks” and why they shouldn’t be:
- “I Don’t Have Anything to Say” Many CEOs are uncertain of what to say, or how to say it. To them I say, “Inspiration is all around you!”A recent phone call, a long email from a client, an interesting conversation at an industry event; all can be the genesis of great content. It’s in these conversations that biggest problems are discussed, challenges confronted, fears and shortcoming addressed. Capitalize on these situations to show the rest of the world that you and your company have the expertise, wisdom and fighting spirit to tackle anything in your way.
- “I Don’t Have the Time?” If you have a smartphone, it’s right in the palm of your hands.Take a picture of something that intrigues you. Record a thought on the way to your next appointment. Key in a quick note so that the insight or inspiration of thought isn’t lost. Forward yourself a cool article and note the reason it spoke to you. Be aware and remain “in the moment.” You’ll find the time to capture and record great expressions for you, your company and your brand.
- “It’s not really my thing!” Sure it is.All effective CEOs have a voice, a vision and the means within them to express their views. It may be somewhat unstructured and require some formal organization, but it’s in there. You wouldn’t be a CEO if it were otherwise. Remember, you don’t have to do it all yourself. Provide that insightful spark and build the right resources – either internal, external, or a combination – to help you communicate your insights with outstanding content that pushes your organization forward.
